Models of Vehicles Used By the Nigerian Police Force

The Nigerian Police Force is a very large organization which consists of 36 state commands, grouped into 12 zones and 7 administrations. It is the principal law enforcement agency in Nigeria headed by the Ministry of Interior. The police force has a staff strength of about 371,800 with plans in place to increase the force size to about 650,000 and for such a sizeable workforce , vehicles are needed for the smooth running and day to day operations of the task force. Without further ado, here are the different brands of vehicles which are currently being used by the Nigerian Police Force.

Toyota Hilux

This Pickup is the alpha and omega of the Nigerian Police Force. It is the most sought after vehicle, popular and the workhorse of the police force. It is a 4 door pickup truck body style produced and marketed by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota with a Layout of Front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, Front-engine, four-wheel-drive powered by either of these engine petrol engine  variants 2.0 L 1TR-FE VVT-i I4, 2.7 L 2TR-FE VVT-i I4, 4.0 L 1GR-FE VVT-i V6, mated to a 5 speed manual transmission or 4 speed automatic transmission with a total engine output of about 160 HP. The reason why this is the most sought after vehicle by the Nigerian police is the fact that it’s easy to maintain, it’s rugged and the spare parts are always readily available when maintenance needs arise.

Toyota Corolla

Another Toyota product  that is well received but the Nigerian Police Force is the Toyota Corolla which is also branded as the best selling name plate in the world. The Toyota Corolla is a 4 door sedan with a Layout of Front-engine, front-wheel-drive or Front-engine, four-wheel-drive powered by either of these petrol engines:
A 1.3 L 1NR-FE I4, 1.5 L 1NZ-FE I4 or 1.8 L 2ZR-FE I4 mated to a 5 speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic transmission with a total engine output of about 110 HP to 140 HP.
Just like it’s elder toyota hilux sibling it’s choice for police duties is because of easy maintenance and spare parts avalability.

Kia Rio

The sub-compact Kia Rio produced by the South Korean manufacturer Kia Motors is another Nigerian Police Force favourite. The Kia Rio is a four door sedan is a front wheel drive vehicle powered by inline-four gasoline engines, 1.2 L Kappa I4 (petrol), 1.4 L Gamma I4 (petrol), 1.6 L Gamma I4 GDI (petrol) a Front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and mated to a either a 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic transmissions with produces a total engine output of 109 HP.

Peugeot/Citroën

This is another vehicle used by the Nigerian police force and mostly operated by the commands and zones in the Nothern regions of Nigeria. Thanks to Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN) and Dangote Group. These vehicles were donated to the Nigerian Police Force and they have sice been put into effective use.

Mitsubishi L200

The not so popular Mitsubishi L200 is another pickup truck used by the Nigerian Police Force. The Mitsubishi L200 is a 4 door  pickup truck style, powered by either a 2.4 L 4G64 I4 (gasoline) engine or a 3.5 L 6G74 V6 (gasoline) mated to a 5 speed manual transmission or a 5 speed automatic transmission with a total power output of 180 HP. A thorough bred work horse it is and it never fails in executing it’s duties when it is called upon.

Ford Ranger

Another tough vehicle from the American car manufacturers Ford is used primarily by the Lagos State branch of the Nigerian Police Force most especially the men of the  Rapid Response Squad (RRS). Produced by Coscharis Motors in Nigeria, The Ford Rager is a 4 door pickup truck with a Front-engine, rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive layout, powered by  either a
2.3-liter EcoBoost I4 (petrol) or
2.5-liter Duratec 25 I4 (petrol) mated to either a 5 speed or 6 speed manual transmission making a total engine output of around 148 HP. Sufficient enough to get the men and women of the Nigerian Police Force from Point A to Point B

Ford Mondeo

From the stable of Coscharis Motors Assembly plant in Lagos, Nigeria comes another offering to the able men and women of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) for Policing duties in the form of a 4 door Ford Mondeo. The Ford Mondeo is based on a Front-engine, front-wheel drive / four-wheel drive layout, powered by these petrol engines, 1.6L Ecoboost I4 (turbocharged gasoline) 160 hp, 2.0L Ecoboost I4 (turbocharged gasoline) 203 hp, 2.0L Ecoboost I4 (turbocharged gasoline) 240 hp,
2.5L I5 B5254T6 220 hp mated to a 5 speed manual transmission. So far this brand of vehicle is serving it’s duties in the police force and it will continue to be used in the nearest forseable future.

Innoson Carrier 4×2

Innoson Carrier or IVM Carrier is a pickup truck manufactured by Nigeria’s indigenous leading vehicle manufacturer INNOSON VEHICLE MANUFACTURING (IVM). The IVM Carrier is a double cabin pickup available in 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive options, powered by a 2.4-Litre or 2.7-Litre, Four Cylinder Mitsubishi Engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. It can comfortably seat 5 men of the police force in comfort. Due to the Government’s new policy of supporting local vehicle manufacturing industries Innoson brands of vehicles are now being used by the police, the army and other para-military agencies in Nigeria and the Innoson Carrier 4×2 is one of such vehicles to be deployed for policing duties.

Innoson IKENGA

Another brand from Nigeria’s indigenous leading vehicle manufacturer INNOSON VEHICLE MANUFACTURING (IVM) is the Innoson IKENGA. Recently launched by the Anambra state police Zonal command by Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state,  The Innoson IKENGA was unveiled to Nigerians in September 2019 and it’s debut launch vehicles was to the Nigerian Police Force.
 The Innoson IKENGA is a crossover vehicle named in honour of “Dr Dozie Ikedife, Ikenga Nnewi“, who is the former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. Popularly known by his traditional title, Ikenga Nnewi, he held the traditional title of Ikuku Ebu Nkpu which was awarded to him by 14 communities in Nnewi North, Nnewi South, Ekwusigo local government areas of Anambra State. He was an obstetrician, gynaecologist and researcher.
Critics say that the Innoson IKENGA brand of vehicle shares body styles and similarities with the Lexus RX350 but as far as it serves the men and women of the Nigerian Police Force and gets the work done. No qualms at all.
